Christchurch city

Christchurch is the gateway to the South Island of New Zealand and one of the most affordable urban centres in the country. Known as the Garden City, it is the second-largest city in the country and is famous for its world-class alpine resort and internationally-acclaimed gardens. The city embraces a lifestyle of dynamic business and education, exciting cuisines and is rich art and culture. Situated on the edge of the Canterbury plains, stretching to the Southern Alps and bordered by hills and the Pacific Ocean, the city is centred in an area with a very diverse geographical environment. It is the many attractions and events of the city and its seasonal weather that makes Christchurch an idyllic place to call home.

Education institutions

There are a great variety of public and private schooling options in Christchurch consisting of both non-denominational and religious institutions. Most schools are co-educational in the city with a small number of girls or boys schools also available throughout the city. When it comes to higher education, there are two main universities, two polytechnics and one major technology institute in Christchurch in addition to a number of private colleges and academies.

Getting around

There are no Toll roads in South Island and driving offers a great way to explore the outer parts of Christchurch, however with a network of trams and buses covering both the central business districts and surrounding suburbs, public transport is perhaps the most convenient way for getting around the Garden City. There are also a number of cycleways and ample bicycle storage options that make cycling both safe, convenient and viable form of transport.

Hospitals

There are a number of public and private hospitals in the Canterbury region that provide a variety of healthcare services. Christchurch Hospital is the main public hospital in the city and provides free healthcare to New Zealand residents with subsidised specialist treatments.
