With the new season of MasterChef New Zealand starting last night, more home buyers will be looking for that perfect kitchen.

Once just serving as a functional room, the kitchen is now becoming a home’s major selling point.

The emphasis is on plenty of storage, lots of bench space for preparation and sleek stainless steel appliances. Not content with just an oven, many home owners also want kitchens complete with a steam oven, teppanyaki plate, deep fryer and wok-burner.

Robin Caudwell of Designer Cabinets won the New Zealand’s Best Kitchen Design Award for 2012 with industrial kitchen featuring a stainless steel island bench, stainless steel appliances and commercial lighting.

A newly-renovated kitchen can add value to a home; just take one look at Realestate.co.nz:

“The kitchen is a chef’s dream with clean modern lines, Stonex benchtop and superior chattels including a Bosch Pyrolitic oven, Combi oven and integrated appliances including fridge/freezer and Asko dishwasher”;

“The stand-out feature is the gourmet kitchen which would make any chef happy – large gas hob with electric oven, amazing bench tops and cupboard spaces plus an island preparation bench”;

“Gorgeous kitchen complete with butler’s pantry provides plenty of room for the budding or experienced chef”.

Developer Lend Lease calls it the Masterchef phenomena. When they asked buyers what they wanted from a new apartment in Melbourne, 77 per cent rated the kitchen as most important.

The kitchen was ”king” for many purchasers, said the general manager of development, apartments, Ben Coughlan, at Lend Lease.

”The kitchen is now the most important room in the apartment, and young professionals are dining at home, and practising the dishes they learned about on television.”
