A strong New Zealand economy in 2014 is expected to lure many Australian workers across the Tasman, experts say.
The New Zealand Treasury last week announced the short term outlook for the economy is continuing to strengthen as better employment rates indicate growth is becoming more sustainable.
The Treasury’s findings are supported by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) latest annual economic outlook which recently forecast annual economic growth in New Zealand of 2.4% and 3.6% over the next two calendar years.
This forecast puts New Zealand in the top six developed economy growth rates for 2014 and is above the OECD average of 2.4 percent and better than Australia at 2.7 percent.
Furthermore, according to recent figures from Statistics New Zealand, employment increased by 1.2 per cent, or by 27,000 jobs, in the third quarter of 2013, the most since early 2007. At the same time, the jobless rate fell to 6.2 per cent from 6.4 per cent.
Recruitment agency, Hays, says there has been a 25 to 30 per cent increase in enquiries from Australians about permanent roles in New Zealand thanks largely to the stronger economy and lower unemployment rates.
“We expect to receive more interest from Australians as permanent employment opportunities grow along with the increase in openness from employers towards temporary/contract employment,” said Jason Walker, Managing Director of Hays in New Zealand.
“The demand for strong, experienced and skilled professionals is increasing and Australian candidates have the advantage of being permitted to work in the country under the same conditions as New Zealanders.”
Otago Chamber of Commerce president Peter McIntyre is quoted in the Otago Daily Times as saying there was a general consensus of 2014 being a ”boom year” driven by three things: growth in Auckland, the Christchurch rebuild and the prosperity of the rural sector.
