Common Moving Mistakes

Moving might seem like common sense but the difference between a good and a bad move comes down to breakages. When you go with Grace, your fragile items are in good hands.

Bad Packing

Even though it appears straightforward packing is both a skill and an art. Pack strategically by working your way around the house, starting with less frequently used items. Make sure you designate marshalling areas so you don’t find yourself cornered or tripping over wayward boxes. Quality packing materials will ensure your items look as good coming out the box as they did going in. And there’s one rookie mistake you want to avoid: keep your newspapers for reading, unless you want to read last month’s news backwards on your white dinner plates.

Furniture Fail

Mother nature has a mind of her own and while we all like to hope that it’s not going to rain on moving day, sometimes luck isn’t on our side. To avoid sleeping on a soggy mattress, always use protector bags. Not only will it keep your mattress dry, it will also protect against dust and damage. The same goes for couches, TV’s and high value items, using proper packaging keeps your valuables dry and safe. When it comes to weather, there’s no such thing as ‘winging it’.

Improper Planning

It’s not until you move that you realise how long it actually takes to get organised and how much stuff you really have. Avoiding the last minute panic is all about careful planning. Our moving consultants recommend starting 5 to 8 weeks before your move and systematically working your way through through our moving checklist.

Moving Junk

The ultimate cardinal sin of packing is moving junk. Start purging by working through clutter collection points and sorting your items into two piles: stay and go.

The Right Removalist

Moving without a removalist is a bit like fishing with a marshmallow. We’ve all heard the horror stories about the truck that broke down or the heirloom that arrived in pieces. To avoid telling your own sad story, start by asking yourself the right questions. Has the company been in business for a long time? Do they have an office? Do they have their own vehicles? Do they have insurance? Opting for the cheapest rate could see you spending a lot more than you’re saving.
