Council Address Housing Crisis

The future of housing in Auckland is up for debate with the unveiling of Auckland’s Unitary Plan.

Residents will have until May 31 this year to comment on the draft plan which outlines the implementation of the Auckland Plan, the city’s vision for the next 30 years.

Speaking at a press conference today, Mayor Len Brown said the Unitary Plan will allow the city to expand while still being a great place to live.

“The Unitary Plan will help us deliver a better city. It will also help us to deliver one which is affordable for our communities,” Mr Brown said.

The Auckland Plan embraces the whole region – from Te Hana in the north to Pukekohe in the south and includes the region’s extensive coastal and maritime areas.

While the Plan looks at many aspects of life in Auckland, one of its main focuses is on housing, in particular:

  • Increasing housing choice to meet diverse preferences and needs
  • Improving the quality of existing and new housing
  • Improving housing affordability and the supply of affordable housing

According to Mr Brown, Auckland’s population is set to nearly double over the next 30 years.

“Our population will grow by a million people. More than 60 per cent of this will come from our existing populous. They have to live somewhere. The region needs a mix of new housing land, and more intensive housing in key areas of the city,” he said.

The Plan will give residents more choices in housing with the availability of low, medium and high-rise apartments, terraced town houses, mixed use developments and stand-alone houses.
