New data from Statistics New Zealand has revealed that a quarter of New Zealand’s population – or over a million people – were born overseas.
The data, collated from the 2013 census, also shows that half a million of Auckland’s population were born overseas.
While England remained the most common country for people to move from, the number of those moving to New Zealand after being born in Asia is rising rapidly, almost doubling over the past 12 years.
Here are the most common overseas countries of birth:
- England
- China
- India
- Australia
- South Africa
- Fiji
- Samoa
- Philippines
- Korea
- Scotland
